Yearbook 1974

James R. “Jim” Manuel, age 80, of Wilmington, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on November 12, 2014, at the Winchester Hospital.
After teaching in South Korea Jim came to Germany where he made life long relationships with his students in Bonn, Munich, and Heidelberg. Jim’s passion for teaching young minds was incredible; he not only made teaching fun, but he made his student’s believe in themselves and strive to be whatever they wanted to be. He is remembered by numerous Students and left a deep impression in their lives.

  1. Jim was a fun-loving teacher who got me to understand Algebra II, trigonometry, and calculus. He had the knack to make higher math make sense: skills I needed when pursuing my engineering degree.

The most fun with Jim was serving on the yearbook staff and developing photographs in the basement near the elementary school. He gave us basic guidance, then let us use initiative to memorialize our school year. He provided gentle ideas to expand our creativity. Teachers like Jim opened our minds to seek challenges and make mistakes in a safe environment.

I had the fortune to maintain contact with Jim throughout the rest of his life. I hope I can come somewhat close to his caring personality that brightened our lives.
